So, you have successfully set up your Hytale dedicated server. Your world is generated, your friends or community members are logging in, and the adventure is just beginning. But as any experienced server owner knows, running a smooth multiplayer experience requires more than just keeping the server online.
You need control.
Hytale’s engine comes with a powerful suite of console commands that allow you to manage players, troubleshoot issues, and protect your world from griefers. While you can explore our complete Hytale Server Commands List & Usage Guide for a full breakdown of every available function, the following five are absolutely critical for day-to-day management.
Before you can use these, ensure you have operator permissions by typing /op self in the server console (or /op add [YourPlayerName]).
Here are the 5 essential Hytale server commands every admin needs to memorize.
1. The Ban Hammer: /ban and /kick
No matter how tight-knit your community is, if you run a public server, you will eventually encounter a griefer or a rule-breaker. You need to know how to remove them quickly before they ruin the experience for everyone else.
- Command:
/kick [player] - What it does: Instantly disconnects the target player from the server. They can rejoin immediately, making this a good “warning shot” for minor infractions.
- Command:
/ban [player] --reason - What it does: Permanently blocks the player from joining your server. The optional
--reasonparameter lets you leave a message (e.g.,/ban GrieferGuy --reason Stealing from chests). - The Reversal: If you make a mistake, simply use
/unban [player].
2. The Gatekeeper: /whitelist
If you are running a private server for your friends, a guild, or a Patreon community, relying on a password is often not enough. Passwords get leaked. The whitelist is your ultimate security measure.
- Command:
/whitelist enable - What it does: Turns on the whitelist system. Once active, only players whose names are on the list can join the server. Anyone else will be rejected at the loading screen.
- Adding Players: Use
/whitelist add [player]to grant someone access. - Checking the List: Use
/whitelist listto see exactly who currently has permission to join your world.
3. The World Saver: /backup
In an open-world sandbox game, things go wrong. A player might accidentally trigger a massive explosion that destroys a custom-built town, or a world-generation glitch could corrupt a chunk.
- Command:
/backup - What it does: Instantly creates a complete backup of your universe.
- Pro Tip: While East Gate Hosting provides automated daily backups through your control panel schedules, running the
/backupcommand manually before a major server event, a boss fight, or installing a new server-side script is a lifesaver.
4. The Rescue Operation: /tp and /unstuck
Players get lost. Players fall into ravines they can’t climb out of. Players encounter weird collision bugs and get trapped inside blocks. As an admin, you are the rescue team.
- Command:
/tp [player] [targetPlayer] - What it does: Teleports the first player directly to the location of the second player. This is perfect for reuniting a party that got separated in the deep caves.
- Command:
/unstuck(or telling a player to use it) - What it does: Instantly teleports the user to the highest safe block directly above their current position. It is the perfect quick fix for someone who has clipped through the map.
5. The Performance Check: /server gc
If your server has been running for days and players are exploring in every direction, the server is tracking a massive amount of data. Sometimes, the server’s memory holds onto data for chunks that no one is currently in.
- Command:
/server gc - What it does: Forces the server to run “Garbage Collection.” It clears out memory for data that is no longer in use, freeing up RAM and potentially smoothing out lag spikes without needing to restart the entire server.
