Wardogs Early Access Review: A Great KOTH, But Not an Arma Killer

Wardogs has officially dropped into Steam Early Access, and it is actively pulling massive numbers. Built on Unreal Engine 5, Bulkhead’s 100-player tactical FPS has injected a much-needed jolt of adrenaline into the military shooter genre.

If you are a fan of high-stakes, large-scale combat, there is a lot to celebrate here. Wardogs completely nails the King of the Hill (KOTH) formula. The 33v33v33 faction dynamic over randomized control zones creates natural, chaotic flashpoints, and the cash-based progression system rewards tactical squad play without feeling overly punishing. The developers have laid out an incredibly promising roadmap for the next one to two years of Early Access, and their communication with the player base proves they are building this game for the long haul.

Wardogs is undoubtedly a great game, and it is going to keep getting better. But for dedicated MilSim units looking for their next permanent home, it is important to recognize the difference between a highly polished tactical shooter and a true military sandbox.

Here is why Wardogs is an incredible KOTH experience, but why your clan’s weekly operations still belong in Arma.

The Tactical Shooter vs. The Military Sandbox

Wardogs is designed to provide a structured, competitive loop. You spawn, you push the objective, you earn cash, and you fight the other two factions. The game dictates the rules of engagement, the victory conditions, and the flow of the map.

Arma 3 and Arma Reforger operate on a fundamentally different philosophy: absolute freedom.

Arma does not tell your unit how to play. It provides a massive landmass, a suite of vehicles, and an underlying physics engine, and then steps out of the way. If your unit wants to spend three hours conducting a stealth HALO jump to sabotage a convoy before extracting under the cover of artillery fire, Arma lets you build that exact scenario. Wardogs provides an excellent match; Arma provides a platform for a campaign.

The Undisputed Power of Zeus

The single feature that keeps Arma anchored as the undisputed king of MilSim is the live Game Master tool: Zeus.

In a rigid shooter, once the match starts, the environment is static. In Arma, a designated Zeus administrator controls the battlefield in real-time. If an operation is going too smoothly, Zeus can dynamically spawn an enemy QRF (Quick Reaction Force), change the weather to a torrential downpour, or call in mortar strikes to force the squad to reposition.

This level of dynamic, on-the-fly storytelling is impossible in an objective-locked game like Wardogs. For clan leaders trying to craft engaging, unpredictable PvE operations for their members every weekend, the Zeus interface is an irreplaceable tool.

The Modding Ecosystem

Early Access games naturally take time to build out their arsenals and vehicle rosters. Wardogs will undoubtedly expand its content over the coming year, but it is currently competing against Arma’s decade-deep ecosystem.

Whether your unit wants to fight in a Cold War setting, modern-day Fallujah, or the Halo universe, the Steam Workshop integration in Arma 3 allows you to transform the game into entirely different eras of warfare. Arma Reforger’s Enfusion engine has pushed this even further, allowing players to download custom assets and mods directly while joining a server.

The Hardware Reality: Hosting Massive Operations

Wardogs is fantastic for dropping into a quick, chaotic public lobby. But when you want to lock the server down, orchestrate a 100-player combined arms operation, and ensure every bullet registers flawlessly, you need dedicated infrastructure.

Running large-scale Arma operations with advanced AI mods, custom scripts, and Zeus mechanics requires brutal processing power. The Real Virtuality 4 (Arma 3) and Enfusion (Reforger) engines are incredibly reliant on single-core CPU performance.

At East Gate Hosting, we don’t put your MilSim community on shared, budget threads. We deploy your Arma servers on unthrottled, extreme-frequency dedicated CPUs designed specifically to crush single-thread bottlenecks. Paired with pure Enterprise NVMe storage, your custom modpacks load instantly, and your server maintains stable, high-FPS performance even when Zeus spawns a massive enemy platoon.

Our customized Pterodactyl panel gives you total administrative control over your server files, automated mod updates, and instant backups.

Enjoy the Early Access journey of Wardogs, it is a phenomenal shooter that deserves the hype. But when it comes time for your unit to run a dedicated, custom-tailored operation, rely on the undisputed sandbox.
